Use of Modafinil
Co-author of the new review, Ruairidh McLennan Battleday, is a lecturer at the University of Oxford. Ruairidh made the following statement with regards to the study : “This is the first overview of modafinil’s actions in non-sleep-deprived individuals since 2008, and so we were able to include a lot of recent data”. Accordingly, the recent studies of the drug have used a great complexity of cognition test than was previously used, and found significant evidence that Modafinil has the effect of enhancing the thought-process.
The drug has particularly interesting effects on “‘higher-brain functions that rely on contribution from multiple simple cognitive processes,” Battleday said.
These recent findings may raise ethical concerns about the use of Modafinil. In particular, its use as a performance-enhancer has the potential to impart an unfair advantage in both the preparation for and taking of examinations, the researchers wrote in their review, which can be found online in the journal of Neuropsychopharmacology.

Previous studies have shown variation in results of Modafinil use in otherwise healthy individuals who aren’t suffering with sleep-deprivation. However, for the new paper, the researchers looked at a total of 24 placebo-controlled studies in healthy people, dating between between 1990 and 2014. These studies covered a large number of individuals, totaling around 700, and participants completed tests relating to a various elements of thought, from  planning and decision-making, to memory and creativity.

ModafinilModalert only appears to have an affect on certain types of cognition. Generally, the smart-drug appears to offer marked improvements in executive function, which is the name given to the ability to skim through new information and make decisions based on the information. Modafinil can also offer some increases in the ability of an individual to pay attention to instructions and learn from them.
However, the drug isn’t entirely consistent when it comes to aiding participants in simple tests of attention, the scientists found. There was “little effect on creativity and motor excitability,” the report summarises, and there were no significant improvements in working memory, flexibility of thought or the ability to split attention between tasks.
Modalert seems to have very few side effects. Seventy percent of the studies that looked into the mood and side effects experienced by users found a low incidence of insomnia, headache, stomachache or nausea. All three of which were also reported by some of the participants who had received a placebo.
A further co-author of the study, postdoctorate researcher at Oxford, Anna-Katharine Brem concluded that “in the face of vanishingly few side effects in these controlled environments, modafinil can be considered a cognitive enhancer”.
“However, we would like to stress the point that with any method used to enhance cognition, ethical considerations always have to be taken into account: This is an important avenue for future work to explore,” Brem said.
